THE SEASON
If DRY IN THE NORTH. WAIKATO STANDING WELL. The condition of the pastures in the North Auckland area of the province Is not at all promising as a result of the dry season. Over the principal portion there is a very parched appearance, and rain is badly needed. The continued dryness is causing a marked diminution in the milk returns. While the need for rain is greatly felt in Waikato, and the milk yield has undoubtedly fallen as a result, the district is standing the dry spell wonderfully well, and no factories, so far, have found it necessary to close. Neither is such likely. Reclaimed swamp land, of which there are large areas in Waikato, holds advantages in dry periods over other classes of land, owing to its moisture-retaining nature, as also do the pumice areas, up and around Lichfield, where the pastures are said to he full of deep green feed. The King Country is stated not to have fared too well, and we hear that the factory at Owhanga is likely to close down any day.
