FLYING HOME

LIEUT. PARER’§ DEPARTURE,

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received January 9, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 8. Lieutenant Parer left the Hounslow aerodrome at 10.34 a.m. to-day in an attempt to fly to Australia. v The weather was fine and the wind strong, when the machine left the aerodrome.

Lieut. Parer who is accompanied by Lieut. Mclntosh, is attempting the high I under ' similar conditions to Etinnc Poulct. He has an old machine of the de Haviland type, and his prospects of success were regarded with such dubiety that an order was issued by Brigadier-General Jess, commanding the A.I.F. in the United Kingdom, forbidding them to start in the attempt to fly to Australia. They had DOt received his order on Christmas Evo, and made, an effort to start before it could overtake them, aviators entered the machine, arid rosq three times from the Waddon aerodrome, but each time failed to locate Hounslow. They returned and found the engine required an overhaul. This work evidently took longer than was anticipated and meanwhile the men have probably succeeded in getting the order withdrawn, A London correspondent reports that Lieutenant Mclntosh, who was longing to fly home, accidentally met a Glasgow merchant prince, who, without being asked, handed over a cheque for £IOOO without any conditions. Lieutenants Mclntosh and Parer thereupon joined their forces and bought a machine, receiving £IOO as a donation 'the cost of their petrol.
