BRITISH POLITICS
INDICATIONS OF BY-ELECTIONS. GROWTH OP THE LABOUR VOTE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received January 5, 7.20 p.m. LONDON, January 4. The newspapers regard the Spen Voßey result as the severest blow to the Coalition Government since the general election. They explain that the remarkable growth of the Labour vote at the recent by-elections is due to the lower section of the middle classes, who, squeezed by taxation and the cost of living, are transferring their votes to Labour. They are not alarmed at Labour’s policy of the nationalisation of coal mines and public services, and of a levy on capital.
