—: + . EXTENSIVE RAIDS CARRIED OUX> HUNDREDS OF ARRESTS MADE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received January 4, 5.5 p.m. NEW YORK, Jan. 2. Judge Palmer has announced that raids on Radicals have been carried out in 35 cities, where hundreds of members of the Communist Party hare been arrested, and it is expected that the total will reach 1000. A Chicago message states that more than 200' Radicals have been arrested on charges of disseminating Bolshevik literature and planning to overthrow the Government. It is reported that 500 Communists have been arrested in New York, 300 in Detroit and 400 in Philadelphia. It is now estimated that the total will be 2000. Reports coming in from many cities show that the Department -if Justice is making a systematic attempt to thoroughly free the country from the Radicals, especially members of the Communist Party, which recently issued a manifesto advocating the overthrow of the American Government. It is intimated tnat the Government will begin deportation proceedings against many of those arrested. Large quantities of Radical literature were- also seized.
