THE RUSSIAN TANGLE

SUMMARY OF OPERATIONS. PETLURA'S ARMY BROKEN. DENIKEN'S RETREAT CONTINUES. (Australian, N.Z. and Reuter.) Received January 4, 5.5 p.m. LONDON,.' J,an. 2. An authoritative summary of operations in Russia in the last fortnight shows that the Russian moral in North Russia is good, and. there is nothing to fear from the activities of the present Bolshevik forces. The Esthonians continue to repol concentrated Red attacks, and the Letts are equally throwing back attacks. In the Ukraine General Petlura s army has been broken up, and General Petlura is no longer a serious factor m Russian politics. In South Russia General Deniken's retreat continues, owing to the overwhelming forces which are evidently attempting to reach .the sea of Azof, which is less than 100 miles away, with the object of splitting up General Deniken's forces. In East Russia the Reds are driving back General Butov's weaker forces towards the Mongolian frontier. An Allied contingent on the railway is withdrawing eastward in conjunction with the main Serbian army. ARMISTICE WITH ESTHONIA. ARRANGED BY SOVIET RUSSIA. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received January 4, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 2. The Daily Chronicle's Dorpat correspondent witnessed on December 31, the signature of a treaty between Soviet Russia and Esthonia for The cessation of hostilities. It technically means only a week's armistice terminable thereafter at 24 hours' notice, but it actually means a month, as the Esthonian Assembly cannot ratify the treaty before February. The .interval will enable the Esthonians to test the Bolshevist professions of fraternity. The agreement recognises Esthonia's entire independence of Soviet Russia. DENIKEN DEPOSED. HIS GOVERNMENT OVERTHROWN (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received Jan. 4, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 3. x The Deniken Government has been overthrown. According to a Moscow wireless message a coup d'aetat has placed General Rofanofski at the head of the anti-Bolshevik forces.
