NEW YEAR ON AN ATOLL
SPORTS AT FANNING ISLAND. (Australian and N.Z. Gable Assn.) Received January 2, 8.25 p.m. FANNING ISLAND, Jan. 2. The New Year sports gathering at the Pacific cable station were an immense success. Two hundred Gilbert Islanders enthusiastically competed in boxing* sprinting, mat-making' and tug-of-war, This lonely atoll in the mldPaciflo is the temporary home of New Zealand, Australian and English cable officers. Notwithstanding the strenuous present-day cable work, they find time to display an Anzac keenness for sport and show an example to the natives of what has gone far in Empire building. The concluding event was a tug-of-war between the New Zealand and Australian operators, and in the final the Maorilanders secured a closely-con-tested' victory.
