AUCKLAND SUMMER MEETING. I ■ J SNUB WINS A.R.G. PLATE. NOTES ON THE RACING. I (Bv Telegraph.—Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, Friday. ' Te Oro again showed what a good ' hack lie is when the Wauchope gcld- ; ing won Lie Goodwood Handicap, the 1 opening event of the programme and I Horkfleid ran a good horse to get I within a neck of the winner. It was a small field of four two-year-olds that wont out to contest the Sylvia Handicap. The Welkin colt Weldon justified the confidence reposed in him by 1 lie selectors, leading from the harrier rise and easily stalling off a challenge by Landslide. Willi the scratching of Tinopai, the colours of the leading Waikato stable were entrusted to King Lupin In the principal event, the Grandstand Handicap. He flattered his supporters for six furlongs, but when the pressure was on, both Gazique and Melee passed King Lupin, the former winning very comfortably by two lengths I» the good time of 2.6 3-5. Healhercote (T. j Reed) and Red Ribbon (Deeley) fell: as the field was rounding in to the straight. Healhercote broke the off fore shoulder and was destroyed. Both riders were severely shaken, Reeu lining sent to the hospital. Lord Kenilworth on his Summer Cup third was made favourite for the race, but ■ lie never got near the front, and finish- ■ ed a long way last. j As the result of his fall Deeley could not ride Gloaming in the Royal Stakes, and Gray was substituted on | the champion. He hopped out smartly, i but Silver Link quickly superseded him. At the straight entrance the pair were on level terms, and Gloaming had j no difficulty in putting a three-quarter | ■length gap by the time post was j reached. It was great time, Imin 13sec, under the weight, and a record for the race, being 3-5 of a second better than Desert Gold’s and Hymestra’s times. . The weight told on Movement and Rekanui in the Hurdles Handicap and Pendoon, who was'allowed' to run behind the leaders for a mile and a-half, then came away to . win eventually by 15 lengths. He returned a doublefigure dividend. Rekanui finished fourth, but a long way from the win- j her. I Taiamai showed that her racing at. the

meeting had improved her, by the manner in which she won the County Handicap. She got out well, but then dropped back. Once fairly.in the running Bagby brought Taiamai along with a rattle on the outside to beat Hvmestra comfortably by three-quar-ters of a length. £ing Abbey was out with Murihuku to make the early running. ’ . ) Rossini sustained his second defeat when opposed by Snub and- Bonnie Maid in the Auckland Plate. Over the

first mile Edisini was pocketed m behind Snub, with Bonnie Maid ranged on the outside. Half a mile from home the pace increased, and despite Rossini’s desperate effort over the last furlong and a-half, when he once-actually headed Snub, the latter came again under the whip, and flashed past the post, with a neck advantage. , The victory of O ’Shea and his mount was a very popular one. The last half mile of the journey was run in 48see., and the full distance of a mile and a-half m 2.38 3-5. Clonmel sealed several close up performances by getting out to fourth at the end of the first furlong, and easily stalling off all opposition in the decision of the five furlongs, won the Grey Handicap from a field of twenty, which contested it. The little fancied Loved One treated his supporters to a second dividend of over a score. Totallsator Returns. The totalisator investments for the day were £98,719 10s, and for the four days of the meeting £438,781 10s, which was an increase of £172,611 10s over the four days last year. Results.
