SUCCES&J-'UL INAUGURAL MEETING. r BIG ENTRIES AND .ATTENDANCE, Success attended the inaugural sports, dancing, and musical carnival of : the Waikato' Caledonian and Social Society, held at Claudelands, yesterday, j The weather was, for the most part, fine, and the attendance exceeded by I far the expectations of the committee. The programme was, exceedingly attractive ■ i ,‘ho -value of the trophies, •which totalled £440. acted as a great inducement to outsiders to compete. The meeting an excellent augury for the future, and with careful nursing, this carnival, which it is proposed to make a permanent fixture, should develop into a’ very important function. It has had a good start, and should be fostered. The Caledonian events were carried off smoothly, and without hitch, but there was a sad lack of oganisation on the athletic side, almost Amounting to muddle, and the committee will have to look to this in future if success is to attend its gatherings. The carnival was a welcome change for Waikato, and a good strong breath of the Highlands permeated the atmosphere, which was full of pipes, kilts, Jfetnd strange language. Every credit ’Wjfciue to the president, Mr J. Gordon, secretary, Mr W. M. Keenan, and the committee for their excellent effort, the result of which was success. The judge of the piping was Mr D. McKechnic; of the dancing, Mr W. Bolton; ■ , of the athletic events, Messrs E. P. Stevens and J. Dickson. The gate receipts totalled £157, representing entry payments by 4000 people.
