SPRINGDALE. PICNIC AND SPORTS. The homestead of Mr M. Shandley presented a very busy appearance on Boxing Day, when the Springdale Athletic Club's sports were held. The Farmers' Union combined wth the ciub in the holding of a settlers' picnic, and a very successful function resulted. Messrs D. Johnson and T. Hitchman, the secretaries, spared no effort to make things run smoothly, and they were ably assisted by the officials of the Union anci the Athletic Club. A most enjoyable day was spent by all present, there being spcrts and competitions for all A special prize of 10s was donated by Mr Law, and 6s and a gold medal for a points prize by Mr Parkinson, the latter being won by A. A great deal of interest centred in the tug-of-war, "Springdale versus the World," 8 a-side, which was won by Springdale after a most strenuous contest. At the conclusion very hearty cheers were given for Mr and Mrs Shandley for their kindness in lending their paddock for the gslhering. The evening was finished up by a social and dance in the hall, which was much enjoyed, a large number being present, and it was voted a fine conclusion to a happy day.
