AUSTRALIAN MURDERED
FRACAS AT PERONNE. SHOT AFTER A QUARREL. •(Australian and N.Z. Cahle Assn.) PARIS, Dec. 31. Inquiry by the BriHish authorities with reference to the Peronne fracas on November 13, in which an Australian soldier was killed, shows that two Australians belonging to the graves detachment encamped nearby, entered a cafe. A Frenchman belonging to the reconstruction camp of mixed nationalities followed and accused the Australians.of stealing a hatchet. The Australians denied the accusation, and the Frenchman and others assaulted the Australians, who forced their way to the door and ran along the road. Their assailants followed, firing a revolver, one Australian being killed and another severely wounded. The commandant of the reconstruction camp, in a letter, deeply regrets the incident, and pays a.warm tribute to the Australians' gallantry in the war. He states that all nationalities under his command, as well as the in-habitants-on the neighbourhood, hold a high opinion of the Australians, and demanded that their assailants be brought to justice. Four Frenchmen were" arrested and charged with murder.
