OBITUARY

MR JOHN P. FITZGERALD. Residents of the Matamata and Thames Valley districts learned with regret the death of an old resident, Mr John Patrick Fitzgerald, of Harwood Road,Matamata, which occurred at his residence on Saturday last. The deceased had been more or less seriously ill for many months oast, and his demise was not unexpected. His illness, caused through a disease contracted while following his previous occupation as a miner on the goldfields, was at times very painful, but he bore it with a cheerfulness only characteristic of the man. John Patrick Fitzgerald had led a hard-working and honest life, and the memory of it will be bright during the lifetime of his many friends. His word was his bond, and he was honest in his convictions. His life was one of service to his family and fcllowmon. He took up his present farm when the sections were first thrown open. Sympathy has beep extended by the whole district to his sorrowing widow and family, who have had more than their share of trouble during the past two years. Mr Fitzgerald was in his 61th year. The funeral took place at the Matamata. cemetery m Monday, the cortege Iteing a very long one. The burial service was most impressive, and the floral emblems bore ample testimony to the esteem in which the deceased and his family were held and the general regret at the departure of a good settler.
