EXPANDING TRADE

BY WAIKATO RIVER SERVICE.

LARGER STEAMERS PUT ON

BOROUGH COUNCIL MOVING: Owing to the tremendous increase of ■ cargo offering bv the river route, the i Northern Steamship Company has placed the s.s. Rimu, a steamer of 412 tons, on tho Onehunga-Port \\aikato serv.ee. The Rimu made her first trip this week to Port Waikato with a cargo approaching some 250 tons of general goods. The steamers Freetrader and Tawera, with a flotilla of barges, met the Rimu, and transhipped the goods in quick time, and are now on their way up the river, and expect to reach Hr>"-iilton about Tuesday next. We are pleased to note that the Borough Council realise the importance of making provision quickly to cope with the greatly-augmented trade, and are using expedition to prepare a barge landing of some 50 feet to relieve the' situation. Crs. McKinnon and Tristram, the supervisor, and Captain Ragg, have already selected a site, and decided on a plan to meet the pressing requirements. Cr. McKinnon is preparing a rough sketch plan of a wharf and shed on similar lines to the splendid structure now almost completed at. Pacroa to handle, th e river traffic. We hope to see the Hamilton wharf in course of erection at an early date, as'the export trade from here, as well as the import trade, is assuming pleasing proportions, and bids fair to make Hamilton a distributing port of considerable importance in the near future.
