POSITION IN HUNGARY
OUTPOST CONFLICTS. BETWEEN FRENCH AND HUNGARIANS. ARMS FOR ROUMANIA. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received April 1, 1.35 a.m. PARIS. March 30. Outpost conflicts have been resumed between the French and Hungarians at Szcgedin. There were some casualties on both sides. The French retired to Szegedin.
It is understood that the suggested cordon from the Black Sea to the Baltic does not meet with the American and British approval, being regarded as impracticable. The Matin declares that the Council of Pour has decided to send arms and material to Roumania to enable the latter to rapidly reorganise her forces; also that General Mangin, who had been recalled from the occupied area in Germany, has been appointed Commander-in-Chief in Roumania, with full power over the Polish army in creating a cordon from the Baltic to the Black Sea. It is reported that the Germans have been advised to leave Hungary. PARIS, March 31. It is reported that French troops between Hungary and Roumania were attacked, losing many prisoners. The Hungarian army is threatening the Roumanian frontier. AN ANXIOUS WEEK-END. HUNGARY OPENLY MOBILISING, \ * - INTENDS TO JOIN THE BOLSHEVISTS. OUTPOST SKIRMISHES. FRENCH TROOPS WITHDRAWN. (United Service.) (Received April 1, 12.50 pan.) PARIS, March 30. The Conference is having a moat anxious weekend. A new war has practically started in South-eastern Europe, and Hungary’s defiance cannot be overlooked. She is openly mobilising against the Allies vath two avowed objects—joining the Russian Bolshevists military enterprises and preserving Hungary intact. Skirmishes between Maygar and French outposts are reported. The French troops have been withdrawn in order to avoid useless encounters. A FRENCH REVERSE. 300 TROOPS TAKEN PRISONER. (Reuter’s Telegrams.) (Received April 1, 12.40 p.m.) PARIS, March 31. It is anounced that 300 French troops, who were stationed in the neutral zone between Hungary and Roumania have been captured by Hungarians.
