EVADING DRILL
SUBSTANTIAL FINES IMPOSED.
At the Magistrate’s Court at Hamilton yesterday, before Mr Poyntou, S.M., R. S. Trautretter was charged by the Defence authorities with having failed to attend drill. He pleaded in excuse that he had been working in the country for the Dairy Association, and had been unable to get into town for drills.
The Defence authorities stated that the defendant had not attended drill since last July. His Worship pointed out that it was unfair to other Territorials for the defendant to evade drill, and imposed a fine of £5, with costs, in default 28 days’ military detention. A. Smith was brought up on a similar charge. He pleaded “Guilty,” but in mitigation said he was employed as a stock clerk, and had to attend sales throughout the district, which made it very awkward for him to attend drills. He was quite willing to put in an extra week in camp if he could be exempted from the weekly parades.
A fine, of £2, with costs 7s, in default 14 days’ military detention, was imposed.
