When the industrial history of New Zealand comes to he written the writer will liud a wealth of material at his command He will describe the rise and progress of our industries and tell how New Zealand manufactured goods gradually supplanted many imported lines at one time deemed indispensable to our comfort and well being, but which wore little by little driven out of this market in favour of the output of our own factories. A chapter might well be devoted to the New Zealand tobacco industry. The story of how Golf? Pouch entered the lists against the imported weed, and what happened should lie worth the telling. Not so long ago this Hawke’s Bay grown tobacco was unknown. To-day everybody smokes it. The popularity of tills local product is said to ho due mainly to its purity and unequalled combustibility, which makes it such a smooth and mellow smoke, absolutely free from bile and soppiness. Moreover New Zealand leaf is known to contain less nicotine than any foreign tobacco, and is therefore decidedly healthier.
