MflTfllVlATfl. Celebration of Peace. A meeting of the Town Board was held this week, Mr J. Price presiding. The Minister for Internal Affairs forwarded a schedule of the proposed celebrations, and stated that in cases subsidies would be granted local bodies to assist them in carrying the scheme out. The suggestion was that the celebrations should cover three days, the object being to celebrate a victorious issue from the war, to honour those who gave their lives for the great cause, to honour those who fought, and to impress upon the young the importance of the victory. The chairman stated that he intended calling a meeting shortly to discuss — (1) The erection of a memorial; (2) to celebrate peace; (3) to welcome the district soldiers. It was suggested that the residents of Tirau and Hinuera and surrounding districts should he invited to join in the Matamata ceelbrations/ and that a request should be made for the 2.50 train, Matamata to Rotorua, to be delayed on the days, fixed. The chairman was commended on his intention, and it was decided that a meeting be held in the Town Hall on Monday, April 7th. General. Mrs. \Y. D. Bayly and family, of Canada, are at present on visit to Mr. and Mrs, J. F. Vosper. A class omitted from the show list was that of d’oyley crochet, in which Miss G. B. Edmonds was awarded first prize. At the Town Board meeting on Monday Mr. Lockie Gannon was appointed to take the complete levels of 'the town area The chairman’s action in instructing Mr. Gannon to draw up a scheme for the supply of water was endorsed. ROTO-O-RANGI. Annual School Picnic. The annual picnic of the Rolo-o-Rangi School was held last Friday, but as the weather was wet it was decided to hold the picnic in the school, and not in Mr. G. Solomon’s paddock as arranged. There was a large attendance of parents and children, all of whom appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves in spite of the had weather. The committee thanked all who helped towards the success of the gathering, especially Mrs Mackercth, who selected and bought most of the prizes and carried out the dispensing of afternoon tea. Races were hold n the playground, the results being as follow: — Boy’s Handicap, 12 years and over: L. Dench 1, G. Rowe 2; Boys’ Handicap, 9 and 10; A. Wilson 1, D. Wilson 2; Boys’ Handicap, 7 and 8: J. Mana 1, C. Dench 2; Boys’ Handicap, infants: K. Peak 1, Teddy Cox 2; Boys’ Long Jump: L. Marx 1, R. Holder 2; Boys’ High Jump: E. Capper 1, G. Rowe 2; Three-legged Race: R. Holder and L. Dench 1, L. Marx and F. Johnston 2; Boys’ Consolation Handicap: F. Clark 1, E. Kemp 2, R. Marx 3; Boys’ Consolation Handicap, infants: E. Johnson 1, S. Kemp 2, E. Diprose 3. Girls’ Handicap, 10 and 11: A. Roach 1, K. Russo 2; Girls’ Handicap, 8 and 9: L. Mackercth 1, F. Johnson 2; Girls’ Handicap, infants: A. Rowe 1, E Holder 2; Egg and.
