WHARF WANTED

APPLICATION FROM SHIPPING oaulPArt if. Mr A. L. Stevenson, manager of the Waikato Shipping Co., waited upon the Hamilton Borough Council last night, and said ho wanted to bring forward a matter which was of great importance to the company and the district. This was tho erection of a shed and wharf at the present landing on the river in Hamilton. The river service was already fairly extensive, and there would probably be considerable developments in the near future, especially in the way of, overseas trade. At present there was I* no covering at the landing for men or goods. The company was not in a position to put up a shed or wharf, and thought that perhaps the Council would see its way to build them, at a cost of from £3OO to £SOO. It would he a good business proposition, for tho Council could charge a wharfage fee of, say, 6d per ton on goods, which would give them a good return, and more than cover interest, etc. Another suggestion was that if the Council would build the shed and wharf, the company would lease them at a yearly rental. Mr Stevenson pointed out that an efficient river service would he one of the chief factors in making Hamilton a big city and port, and therefore the Council should do something to help. At Pirongia tho settlers were erecting a shed and tramway, and at Horsham Downs a shed and derrick. At Cambridge a Government subsidy of £ for £ had been obtained, and a shed and wharf would be constructed. In reply to Cr. Lafferty, Mr Stevenson said the Ferry Bank site was very suitable, but of course there might he a hotter. That was a matter to he decided after investigation. 'Mr Stevenson then thanked the Council and withdrew. Tho matter was not discussed by the Council, owing to the rush of business, hut Tvill probably come before it on Friday evening next, at the adjourned meeting.
