HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS’ HOSTEL. On Wednesday afternoon the governors of tne High School, with their wives, wore entertained at “Abbotsford,’’ the recently established “house” for girls at the local school who require board. The house mistresses, Misses Collins, Harrison and Harrington, proved ideal hostesses, and under their guidance the house prefects served a dainty afternoon tea. Later on the visitors were shown over the “house,” and were delighted with the general comfort prevailing, the cheerful airiness of the dormitories, and '.he glorious views of the river as seen from the balconies. “Abbotsford” is a truly ideal spot for a home for girls, with its healthful situation and beautiful surroundings, while, with Mrs Steel as matron, nothing further may be said as to the management. Miss Collins wore a dainty white frock of soft embroidered muslin; Miss Harrison, white erepe-dc-ehine blouse, and smart skirt of cream garbardine; Miss Harrington was attired in a soft pale blue crepede.chine blouse and black silk skirt; and Mrs Steele wore a handsome frock of black silk . Among the visitors were Mosdames (Hr.) Douglas, A. E. Manning, J. A. Young, and Eben Wilson, Messrs Edgecumbe, Parr, Manning, MaeHiarmid, Dr. Doiurlas, and the headmaster (Mr Eben Wilson). “SOLDIERS’ WELCOME” GARDEN PARTY. A fine day greeted the Welcome Garden Party held in connection with the Methodist Church on Wednesday afternoon. The grounds of Mrs Davey were thrown open for the gathering, and were looking very fresh and green after the recent rain. A largo number of guests were welcomed by Mrs Blamires, who was hostess for the occasion. There was also a fine parade of returned men, both in hospital uniform and mufti, who were recipients of many words of welcome home, and attended to in a most substantial manner at tea time by the young ladies who assisted in this department. There were also present a number of nurses, and Matron Roth well, who came in for a eulogistic speech from Rev. E. 0. Blamires, who made reference to the great work done by them in the late epidemic, as well as the magnificent work done by those who were privileged to go" to the front. Musical items by Miss Laybourno, and elocution by Mrs Martin Williams, and selections by Bandmaster Donovan and members of the Municipal Band filled in the time pleasantly. The tea, which was perfectly served, was presided over by Mcsdamcs Davey and Jones, who were assisted by an able committee. The National Anthem brought the afternoon to a close after the distribution of the small Hymn Books to the. returned members as a souvenir of the gratitude of those left at home for their great efforts in the cause of humanity. 'Mrs Blamires wore a tailored gown of navy, with oyster hat, with touches of black and piuk; Mrs E. J. Davey had a dress of mole crepe-de-chine, with outlinings of corise, hat of mole and touches of green; Mrs J. Jones, grey Jap. side, with trimmings of purple, and smart little hat. Others present were: Mcsdames Luxford, Morton, Lay bon me, Jenkins, Mason, Tidd, Horne,. Ashby,, Stevens, Atkin, West, Williams, Frear, Burgess, Booth, Smith, Owens, McDonald, Sarjeson, Dillicar, OHiver, A. Maunder, Morn, son, Joll, Blaekmore, Bryant, Watkins, Pethy bridge, Matthews, Forbes, Willy, Misses Tidd, Clover, Davies, Clothier, M. Clothier, Bennett, Houghton, Sarjeson, Blaekmore, Bryant, Booth. Broadhent, Hamcs, Pcthyhridge, Joll, Brock. W. Layhourne, Gauiton, Houghton, Farr, and many others.

Matron Rothwoll and the following nurses comprised the hosuital staff: — Nurses Brniisford, Smith, Mandeno, Tayior, Becketts (2), McKenzie, Troutbeck, Johnson. Patterson, Exlcy, Pullam, Law, Corbett.
