Messrs K. H. Hinton, W. P. Kcnah, F. G. Russell, C. Hambly, and H. J. McMickcn have been elected unopposed trustees of the Norfolk Downs Drainage Board. Word has been received that Bugler Jack Blackie, son of Mr R. Blackie, of Hamilton, is returning to New Zealand by the troopship Lancashire, due shortly. Bugler Blackie was for nine months a prisoner of war at Stuttgart, in Germany.

Rev. J. Dukes, of who became ill while attending the Methodist Conference in Christchurch some weeks ago, has undergone an operation, and is now stated to be progressing favourably.

At a meeting of the Ngaruawahia Regatta Committeo, Mr. A. H. Bennett (Health Inspector) was presented with a wristlet watch, suitably inscribed, as an appreciation of his services in connection with the recent regatta and Maori meeting. A vote of condolence with the widow and relatives of the late Mr W, J. McNicol was passed at the annual meeting of the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company in Hamilton this morning. Glowing tributes were paid to the late Mr McNicol’s services to the company.

Mr W. Dempster, of the Government Dairying Department, who is shortly to leave on a trip to America to make investigations into the dried milk industry, was presented by the Auckland Dairy Factory Managers’ Association with a travelling bag as a token ot esteem.

A New Plymouth telegram announces the death of Mr J. Conne'-t, formerly a, member of the Taranaki Provincial Council, and who was for many years chairman of the Harbour Board. He also occupied many other public positions.

Dr. Henry, who, with Sir Potts as soloist, conducted an evangelistic mission in New Zealand some years ago, has accepted a cordial invitation to visit Australasia for a third evangelistic campaign. He was due in Melbourne on the 21st inst, to begin a six months’ campaign in Victoria, after which other States, Tasmania, and New, Zealand will be jvisitted.

The Hamilton Rugby Referees’ Association, in the annual report presented to the meeting last night, referred to the severe loss the Association and the game generally had sustained by the death of Mr A. G. Newdick, from influenza. The meeting stood as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased official. The secretary reported that he had forwarded a letter of condolence to the late Mr Newdick’s relatives. Mr N. Burnet Gadsby, of Te Kuiti, who has been studying medicine at Aberdeen University, has passed his final examinations. Previous to going to Scotland to study, Dr. Gadsby was head prefect at the Wellington College. During the war he put in over a year on a warship doing patrol work ir/the North Sea, and had many exciting experiences, for more than once the man-of-war narrowly escaped destruction.

A Press Association cablegram announces the death of Sir James Reading Fairfax, senior proprietor of the Sydney Morning Herald and the Sydney Mail- Decease.d was born at Leamington, England, on October 17th, 1834. being a son of the late Hon. John Fairfax, sometime M.L.C. of New South Wales, and a pioneer of Australian' journalism. He had been connected! with newspaper work since early life; and was admitted to the proprietary of the Herald in 1857. Sir James, who was one of the best known of Sydney’s public-spirited citizens, and prominently connected with many public and philanthropic institutions, was a director of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, director of the -Carrington Hospital for convalescent patients, a trustee of the Royal Naval House, Queen Victoria Homes for Consumptives, and National Shipwreck Relief and Humane Society of New South Wales, and vice-president of the National Art Gallery of New South Wales. He was created Knight Bachelor in 1898. Deceased was one of the Australian journalists who visited England and France last year.
