HALF-HOLIDAY QUESTION
SHOP ASSISTANTS SEEK CHANGE
A meeting of Hamilton shop assistants was neld last evening in St.. 'Peter’s Schoolroom, for the purpose of then.'advocacy of Saturday afternoon Citfeing in tne town. Mr Jones occupied the chair, and pointed out that the Saturday half-holiday was in vogue in most of the centres in New Zealand, and it was time, ho thought, that Hamilton fell into line in that respect.
■ Air J. Morris recalled the fact that in Auckland the Saturday half-holiday had been completely successful. He, asserted that from a health point of view the Saturday to Monday holiday was by far the better. Sports gatherings would also reap a benefit, and many meinliers at present unable to participate would bo afforded the necessary leisure under the new order of things.
Mr R Anderson also supported the' proposition, and Air W. Hindman, speaking as a commercial traveller, stated that,in his experience tradesmen had suffered no loss whatever from the Saturday afternoon closing in any of the towns visited by him. , A committee was appointed to arrange for an effective propaganda campaign Itefore the noil, the necessary requisition for which comes before the Council to-night. Despite counter attractions, there was a good attendance, and unanimity as to the need of the alteration.
