"AN ABSOLUTE WASTER"

A MAN WITH A RECORD. THEFT AND OBSCENE LANGUAGE. Archibald Neville, alias Harry Williams, alias Daniel O'Keefe, was charged at the Police Court, Hamilton, this morning, before Mr Rawson, S.M., with having used obscene language in Victoria street on Monday. He was further charged with the theft of 10s •id from George Frederick Tregoweth. Accused pleaded guilty to the latter charge. Senior Sergeant Cassells appeared for the police. Sergt. Murphy stated that last night he arrested the accused who used disgusting language on the way to the station. Accused wanted to know on whose information he was arrested. —The sergeant refused to reply. Accused said he was arrested on the information of a woman who was known to the police as a prostitute. After being arrested he was detaiaei at the Police Station for over two hours, before the charge of theft was laid, and to keep him there the police concocted and framed the charge of obscene language. He did not use th? language complained of.

Senior Sergeant Cassells said Hii* was not correct. A complaint had been lodged at the Frankton. police station, and there was only a little delay in finding out, the exact amount of the theft. Accused's conduct at the station was disgraceful. He was an absolute waster and a well-known criminal, and should not be out of gaol. He had just served a term of. reformative treatment. He had been staying at a brothel in Frankton, and was with a prostitute when arrested. Accused was sentenced to seven day's imprisonment with hard labour on the charge of obscene language, and three months' hard labour on the charge of theft, the sentences to be cumulative. Previous Convictions. , Neville, who is a native of New Zealand, born in 1881, had a long list of previous convictions. His occupation was given as "guesser."
