SOLDIER SETTLERS
AND THEIR ROADS.
Hon. W. H. Herries wrote to the Piako County Council, at its meeting yesterday, that he was communicating with the Minister for Lands regarding the Council's letter relative to the standard of the roads now being formed in the Te .Miro and other soldiers' settlements. Arising out of the reading of the minutes. Cr. Bell said he had interviewed Hon. W. H. Herries, who admitted that on a certain road at Te Miro the proposed 12ft formation was not sufficient. In other cases 12ft would be quite enough. The Engineer said the Government was endeavouring to make the roads at the soldiers' settlements as cheaply as possible. Many of the roads being taken over at Maungkawa were too steep, the grade in some places being 1 in 10. These roads may be main roads some day, and. and the grade was too steep. The work would cost more eventually than if done now. Cr. Orr thought it would be better if the Public Works Department save the money to the Council, and allowed the latter to construct the roads.
