A GENERAL ADVANCE
FROM NORTH SEA TO THE LYS. BRITISH REACH TURCOING. (Australian, N.Z. and Reuter.) Received October 19, 11.25 a.m. LONDON, OctoW 18. Sir Douglas Haig reports that the German retreat was begun on Wednesday, under pressure of the armies commanded by the King of the Belgians, and continued on the whole front between the North Sea and the Lys, but by evening the advance had rpached a depth of 12 miles on a front of over 30 miles. The Belgians entered Ostend, and their cavalry are at the gates of Bruges. The Belgian cavalry occupied Ingelminster. The French captured Ritthem, Gulebeke, and Wynfz;hene, further south. The British Army occupied the line of the Lys. northward of Courtrai. Southward of that town the British crossed the river, and readied the outskirts of Turcoing.. Southwards, the Belgians have reached the junction of the Mandel Canal and the Lys, and skirt the river to asm prevails among the civilians in the recaptured territory.
