"PERFECTLY SCANDALOUS"

DRIVING OF STOCK. THROUGH BOROUGH STREETS. COUNCIL TAKING ACTION. At last night's meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council a petition was received from 23 residents of Milton street, protesting against the use of that street as a stock route for cattle going to and from the sale .yards. The great danger to pedestrians, more especially to school children, was increasing almost daily, and it was time some action was taken by which drovers should Im,> compelled to use some less frequented thoroughfare when driving cattle to the sale yards or through the town. Mr W. H. Worsley. head master of the Hamilton West School, wrote on the same subject. He stated that last week a large bull sale was held, and for some time before and after school it was quite unsafe for little children to use the roads in the vicin. if. of the vards. One day, he believed, a child was injured and a few weeks ago his own little girl was charged by a cow and narrowly escaped serious injury. Aliout 1000 children attended the two schols alongside the vards, and it was perfectly scandalous that such a callous disregird of these interests should exist. Hie Mayor said there had been a number of complaints regarding the driving of cattle on the occasion of the recent bull sale. The bulls practically took charge of Milton street for an hour and a-lialf, breaking into yards. The residents had every reason for comnlaint. Something must be done in the matter.

A committee, consisting of the Mayor and Crs. Young. Tristram and Knell, was set up to review the stock routes.

Cr. Young thought someone should l>e compelled to go in front of stock to we warning. Or. Tidd thought the resolution hardly went far enough. The position was as had in other portions of th« borough as in* Milton street; and bulls were coming from every direction. He would like to see a committee set up to go thoroughly into the matter of the removal of the sale yards. Romething drastic must he done. The position was so serious that they must tackle it in a businesslike way. Something very serious would happen if the matter was not taken in hand at once. Cr. Knell suggested that the stock route at Hamilton East be down Boundary road, Peachgrove street and Clyde street. Cv. Tristram thought the time for driving cattle was early in the morning, when no women and children were about. There should be certain hours for cattle driving. It was resolved that the committee meet on Monday afternoon to go thoroughly into the matter. Cr. Tidd moved tha"t. at the next meeting of the and Finance Com. mittoe. the whole question be reviewed. Cr. Fraser Smith seconded, and the \ motion was carried. j
