TAUPIRI. Tennis Club. Tho annual meeting of the Taupiri Tennis Club was held in tho, library on Monday last, Mr R. T. Hill presidingover :i good attendance. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr R. L. Thomas: president, Mr (i. Calvert (on active, service); vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. O'Brien, P. P. Powell, A. H. Waring and T. 0. Smith; secretary ami treasurer, Miss Waring; selection committee, Messrs C. M. (ileoson, W. .lackways and W. ..1011. The opening day was fixed for Saturday, 2Gth October. Patriotic League. The. Taupiri branch of the Auckland Ladies' Patriotic. League held a very successful social in the hall on Friday October 4th. Although the weather was anything but pleasant, there was a good gathering, and the "wool fund" will correspondingly benefit. Mr, Mrs and Miss White provided the music in their usual excellent manner, while Messrs W. Hanna and A. Waring made ideal M.G.'s. Football Match. The Taupiri footballers journeyed to Gordonton on Saturday and met the local team. After a fast and excilinir game the visitors were victorious by 11 points to .'{. The proceeds from the gates were donated to the Red Cross funds, our boys speak in high praise of the hospitality extended to them by the Gordonton Red Cross ladies, who served out a delicious meal. MATAMATA. Loan for Metalling. A meeting of ratepayers of the Patetere riding of the Matamata county was held on Tuesday, the county chairman presiding. The meeting was to consider a proposal to raise the sum of £SOOO for metalling the road from Ba I linger "s hill to Tirau station, from Okoroire" station to Totman'i corner, and from Hinuera station to Hinuera valley. Mr Anderson addressed the meeting, stating that the time had come when the main roads of the riding should be composed of hard metal, in place of sand, which had been used temporarily. The proposal was well received by those present, and was unanimously adopted. A further meeting will be held at Hinuera.

Social Evening. The adherants of the Matamata Methodist Church held a social evening this week. Vocal and instrumental items were contributed by the Misses Mrs Boagey, Miss Attwood, and Mrs Allen. During the evening, farewell addresses were delivered to Mr Barrett Brown by Misses \V. Richards and J. F. Vosper. Mr Brown left Matamata for camp on Thursday. Christmas Gifts. Twelve pounds have been handed to the Christmas Gifts for Soldiers Committee, as a result of a picture showheld by the Matamata Hall Committee on Saturday. Progress at Putaruru. The Salvation Army has purchased a half-acre section in KensinKtim street, Putaruru, which in the meantime will he used as a depot for stores. Later the Army intends building a hall on the site Mr F. C. Flyger has commenced the erection of a house in the same street. Putaruru generally is showing distinrt signs of rapid propress of late, and is worth watching by land-seekers. The district is responding well to the little money which is being expended upon it. New Bridges. Mr Peter Fraser, the contractor for the Waitearike and Omahine bridges, visited Matamata on Wednesday to arrange for the cartage of timber and material to the sites.
