It is understood that General Allenby and his staff entered Jerusalem on foot, emphasising the fact that the Holy City had been liberated, not captured. CELEBRATIONS IN LONDON. (Reuter's Telegrams.) Received December 13, 9.45 a.m. LONDON, Dec. 12. Special celebrations were held in various places in London, including a Te Denm in St. PouPs, to mark the capture of Jerusalem. EFFECT ON THE SULTAN. The Sultan of Turkey is seriously ill, suffering from a breakdown following on the British victories in Palestine and Mesopotamia. GRATITUDE OF RUSSIAN JEWS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received December 13, 10 a.m. ODESSA, December 12. There was a great Jewish demonstration on learning of Britain's plans regarding the Jews in Palestine, when 15,000 participated in a procession two miles long. A German semi-official statement admits that the evacuation of Jerusalem was not voluntary, but declares that the reason the city fell was the TurkoGerman desire to prevent ground sacrod to all God-fearing peoples becoming the scene of bloody fighting. The Patriarch at Jerusalem has telegraphed to the Pope that the city was not damaged, not a shot being fired against it ? QUARDINQ THE HOLY PLACES. (Reuter's Telegrams.) Received Dec. 13, 1.15 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 12. In the House of Commons Mr Lloyd George read a telegram from General Allenby, announcing that he entered Jerusalem afoot on Tuesday. Guards are stationed at the holy places, the Mosque of Omar being placed' under Mohammedan control.
