CAMBRIDGE EN FETE

SURPRISE PACKET CARNIVAL

Cambridge was favoured with a beutiful fine day on Wednsdav for the Gala for raising funds for the Cambridge women's General Hospital and War Relief Committee. The attendance was large and the surprise packets sold well. It has not yet been ascertained the oxaet amount collected during the day and evening, but it must be a substantial sum. Where all worked so hard it would be impossible to mention names. At the same time we cannot pass over the splendid work of the ladies' committee under the direction of Mrs S. Lewis (president) and Mrs H. li. Nixon (hon. secretary). The ladies of the committee were on tile grounds soon after 8 a.m. and dispensed tea and cakes until 5 p.m. As a result of their labours, some £95 was taken and as there were no expenses whatever, the whole of the proceeds will go to the funds. Members of the Commercial Travellers' Association from Hamilton helped in the sale of tickets, and the committee are very much indebted to them for their help. There were numerous sideshows, and a large amount of gift goods, including horses, sheep, pigs, turkeys, fowls, furniture, vege'tables etc were auctioned by Mr R. Brady. * * In the evening the Town Hall was filled when a grand concert was given. The performers included Madame Chambers and Mr T. Harris (Auckland), Miss Turner, Messrs Turner and Foote (Hamilton), Miss T. Boyce and F. Baker (Cambridge). Mr Alf Boyce rnd Miss Turner, played the accomnn niments. It was the original intention of the committee that the drawing for the motor car and other prizes should take place on the sth. Owing, however, to bad weather and other circumstances it was considered advisable to extend the period for -ehing tickets to Wednesday, the 19th September ,and the drawing to take place on Wednesday, 26th. so as to give every holder of a numbered ticket an opportunity of participating in the draw.
