THE FRENCH FRONT
FRENCH AND GERMAN REPORTS OF THE FIGHTING. (Australian and New Zealand and Reuter.) Received May 18, 8.50 p.m. LONDON, May 18. A French communique states that fresh enemy attempts to retake the ground we gained in the Laffoui Mill region failed. The struggle, which was very lively at certain points, turned everywhere to our advantage, the enemy suffering heavy losses. We took more prisoners. Our barrages inflicted heavy losses on three German assaulting detachments which made several fruitless attempts to reach our lines in the Royere Farm-Epine de Chevrigny sector, north-west of Braye en Laonnois. (Admiralty per Wireless Press.) Received May 18, 8.50 p.m. LONDON, May 18. German official: We advanced our line some hundreds of metres near Yauxaillon, eastward of Laffaux. We captured an advanced position to the west near Braye. During May we have taken 2700 French prisoners.
