HEAVY FIGHTING
ON THE WHOLE FRONT. STRONG POSITIONS CAPTURED. PATROL ENCOUNTERS. (Australian ana N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received May 4, 11.10 a.m. LONDON, May 3. Sir Douglas Ilaig reports that heavy fighting is taking place on the whole front. From the Hindenburg line southwards of the Sensee river to the Acheville-Vimy road we are progressing, and have already captured a number of strong positions. A French communique reports artillery activity and patrol encounters throughout the region- of Chemin des Dames. We repulsed enemy raids at a wood west of Mort and Comellet Heights, east of Monthaut.
Detachments penetrated the enemy trenches at Avocourt Wood, on the left bank of the Meuse. Patrol encounters took place on the right bank in the direction of Dunloup Begovaux. Ther is an intermittent cannonade at some points on the front, notably in the sector of St. Mihel. TO LEAVE ST. QUENTIN. ENEMY PREPARATIONS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received May 4, 12.10 p.m. PARIS, May ». The Petit Journal states that the Germans are preparing to leave St. Quentin. They have put up placards which state: "The French will return, because we permit them."
