The Navy Department confirms the presence of German submarines in American waters. A DESTROYER ATTACKED. THE ASSAILANT GETS AWAY. COASTAL SHIPPING ALARMED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received April 18, 11.20 a.m. WASHINGTON, April 17. The Boston Telegraph states that a German submarine off Fire Island attempted to torpedo the destroyer Smith. It missed and disappeared. The destroyer was unable to trace its assailant. American coastal shipping is alarmed. EXCITEMENT iN AMERICA. GERMANY'S FIRST SHOT MISSED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received April 18, 2 p.m. NEW YORK, April 17. Intense excitement has been caused by the presence of a submarine, which places New York within the war zone, coupled with the satisfaction that Germany's first shot against America missed. It is not known where the engagement occurred, but it is reported that the submarine is off the New Jersey coast. Newspapers announce that tlie Navy Department has taken precautions to guard shipping. Recent regulations as to barred zones in the principal harbours are believed to provide sufficient safeguards for New York and other cities from bombardment.
