and : puting countries? The figures, Debt, as far as they can be prei sented, are are out of the rang<*| pi the average imagination, but they stand for the cold facts, with which imagination is not called on to play. At the end of the lirst year of lighting the war cost was £3,750,000,000. This was nearly doubled by the' end of the second year. At the end of January of the year in progress, the total was £15,500,000,000, and the debt charge was £725,000,000. It is anticipated by one of the soundest authorities on high finance that at the conclusion of this year the total cost of the war will have reached the appalling sum of £18,250,000,000, and the charge against this amount will be £912,000,000 per annum. The lastgiven figures indicate the dead-weight which the nations will have to carry when the war is ended—as we are permitted to assume it will be—at the end of the year in which we are.
