HUNNISH ATROCITIES
THE VATICAN'S ATTITUDE.
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received January 16, 9.50 a.m. ROiVJE, January 15. Replying to the Central News, a high official at the Vatican stated that th? Holy See's attitude is unchanged, and continues to observe scrupulous neutrality, but the Pope is unable to retrain from examining the belligerents' war methods, in regard to which it is impossible to avoid the conclusion that Germany's and Austria's unwarrantable :<nd atrocious acts have far exceeded anything whereof Ihe Entente has been guilty. The Pope felt he must show some consideration to the late Emperor, Francis Joseph, who deserved we;l of the Church, but he sees no reason to tolerate the crimes committed in the new Emperor's name.
