THE SOMME BATTLE
STRONG ATTACK ON NEW ZEALANDERS. REPULSED WITS HEAVY LOSSES. BRITISH LINES ADVANCED. BAD WEATHER SETS IN. (High Commissioner's Cable.) LONDON, 3.15 p.m., Thursday. The British official report states that southwards of the Ancre strong counterattacks were made continuously last night on the New Zealanders, but'they were beaten off with severe enemy loss, who' left prisoners and a large number of dead. Notwithstanding the heavy lighting we advanced our front in the neighbourhood. The French official report says that the weather is bad. The ■enemy did not renew his attempts on the Somme front. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received September 22 8.45 a.m. LONDON, September 21. Sir Douglas Haig reports that the New Zealanders repulsed continuous strong counter-attacks southward of the Ancre.
