CONSCRIPTION IN AUSTRALIA
LABOUR'S OPPOSITION. (United Service). SYDNEY, August 25. The Labour Council adopted a resolution by 66 to 30 reaffirming hostility to conscription, also a resolution condemning the speeches of Mr Holman, and the Lord Mayor (Mr Meagher) at the recent Town Hall reception to Mr Hughes, at which they declared their readiness to support Mr Hughes whatever his decision. It was contended that Mr Holman and Mr Meagher did not express the views of the workers in general. Several opponents of the motions declared themselves in favour of conscription if it were considered necessary to win the war. It was claimed that all trades unions were not against conscription. MELBOURNE, August 25. At an important Federal Labour caucus meeting Mr Hughes reported the result of his mission to England. Conscription will be one of the issues discussed.
