A WAIKATO HUT

MONEY TO BE RAISED.

HAMILTON APPROVES PROPOSAL. *|

The scheme whereby it is proposed that Waikato should provide sufficient money to erect and maintain a "hut" under the auspices of the Y.M.C.A. for Waikato boys fighting on the Western front, was propounded to a meeting of the Hamilton Patriotic Committee and a number of returned soldiers at the Soldiers' Club last night by Mr K. J. F. King, Field Secretary for the Y.M.C.A. in New Zealand. There was a good attendance, over which Mr A. Manning president of the local patriotic

society; presided. Mr King went exhaustively into the great work being done by the Y.M.C.A. in connection with the war and then explained the hutment scheme, details of which was set out lengthily in our columns yesterday. The scheme was, he said, supported by the patriotic committees at Cambridge, Te Awauiutu, Morrinsville, Uhaupo and Ngaruawaliia. The proposition is, briefly, that Waikato should provide a separate but, to be known as the Waikato Hut, near the firing line in France. The but will have its own secretary, and will be a place to where the Waikato men can have their letters addressed and where they themselves can assemble, though access will be available to any soldier. The but will be thoroughly equipped with-games, and everything else that will tend to make the establishment homely.

Mr A. K. Manning though! that undoubtedly something should be done on the lines suggested by Mr King.

.Mr 11. .1. Wernhum president of the local branch uf the Victoria League) said he had placed Hie proposal before his committee, who had decided to support it provided it received the approval of the Patriotic Committee.. The League considered that it could, through its organisation, raise £2OO by public collections and sales.

The mooting unanimously decided to

support the sclieme. healing with tlie basis of sHibseoptioti by the various centres in the district, Mr Christie Cambridge, said his

committee was endeavouring to raise £7)00.

It was suggested that £SOO should also be raised by Hamilton, the remaining £7)00 to be provided by the outside districts.

The committee agreed to endeavour to secure £SOO in Hamilton, and it was *

decided tiiat should the amount collected exceed the sum required, the, surplus should he devoted to the general Y.M.C.A. work, the meeting recognising that as much money as could be procured would be used to advantage bv this organisation.
