PENALTY FOR RATES OVERDUE.
At a mooting of the Hamilton Borough Council lust night Mr Frnnfc McGuire, having overlooked payment of his rates by six days, applied for the remission of tho 10 per cent, penalty, as he thought it was a heavy penalty for au oversight, some of the rates being for absentees. The total was over £lO9. The town clerk explained what had been done in the matter in the way of advertising and sending out an explicit circular. On tho motion of the Mayor, w ho expressed sympathy with Mr MoCuire, it was resolved to inform tko latter that the request could not be granted, as it they gave way iJi one case it would lead to chaos. Cr. McKinnon said if they let one off they would have to let all off, and it would mean a loss of £llO.
