In reporting on the matter at last night's meeting of the Council the engineer, Mr S. R. Sims, said the contract. had been completed and he had certified to a final payment of I2l> 15s • r ,d. It was evident, he said, that the Reuitifying Society did not acquaint itself with the position before adversely criticising the work. The plan submitted to and approved by the Council provided a complete scheme for draining this aria, but as sufficient money was not available to carry out the whole scheme a portion only of the work was done. Th e ivdoi t was adopted.

In reply to the Mayor, Cr. Tristram said there was an open drain made from the pipes, which would carry all the water away, but it was not draining tbe upper nart. That was work that could be done later.

Cr. Ha.vter said it would kei p tin bulk ot' the water away and do awa\ with the lagoon itself, but the whoh area would lie swampy in wrt weathei and could not be crossed on foot. Hi thought thev should wxtend the work a little further, right through tin lagoon itself. The engineer said the oo«-t would be Ul.in.
