Military Officers' Conference.

POSTING THE AUCKLAND GROUP

ALL SIDES CONSIDERED.

A number of officers attached to the Auckland group of the Defence Forces have been sitting in conference at Hamilton for the past four days, to go into the whole system of posting the men into the various units. A great many factors had to be studied in carrying out the work, as in a country group like this, where the population is so widely scattered, it is necessary that almost every small community should have a separate drill centre, as on leaving the townships situated along the railway line, the places are too far apart to enable the men to assemble collectively *f or drilling purines. In selecting these centres great oare has been exercised, this officers being very careful to Post the men so as to interfere as. little as possible with the ordinary work of the men themselves, and so as not to inconvenience employers. Previous to po©tdn@. information was oibtainsd from v arious employers of labor regarding their special wishes in connection with the scheme. A thought was also given to the pastimes and pleasures of the men, the endeavor having been to so post them as to enable them to attend drills without having to travel long distances, which in the country places could only result in dissatisfaction at the amount of time expended in travelling backwards and forwards. A number of maps have 'been drawn up, which will tie sujbmitted to head(jaurters for approval. We understand that every courtesy has been shown, and assistance rendered by employers of labor, by local bodies, and private citizens generally, to the local officers in carrying out the work of registration, and in giving tbe information necessary for the best results in posting.
