EXPENSES TOO SMALL
(Per Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received Sept. IS, 8.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 19. Arnst returned from a visit to the country. He states that the offer to give £IOO stake and £250 expenses to meet Barry era, the Thames, is no good to him, ae he wants £750 expenses. He states that the offer to raise his stake in England does. not present much inducement as there would be no difficulty in raising the stake here. He had not made up his mind whether to l meet Barry on the Tbaces if challenged, or to invite him toi row on the Paramatta. If Barry was willing to come be would offer him £l5O expenses. He thinks Fogwell must have been cracked right up to let Barry beat him so easily.

JOHNSON-WELLS' FIGHT

LONDON, September 18. The Rev. F. B. Meyer, minister of Regent Park Chapel, lias agreed, if the Johnson-Wells fight is stopped, to raise an indemnity fund for the out of pocket expenses of the promoter, excluding the comlliatants. The promoter objects to their exclusion, as the combatants have already cost him £2OOO.
NEWSPAPER COMMENT
(Received Sept. 20, 10.10 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 19. The Times says that the case against the Wells fight is strong if solely on sporting grounds. It is far stronger on broad grounds. Public interest is aroused, by means of the cinematograph, of an unwholesome struggle between the black •; ■rr.'mundties. It considers the fight ought to be stopped.
ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY IN PROTEST.
LONDON, Sept. 19. The Archbishop of Canterbury has associated himself with the agitation to stop the Johnson-Wells fight and has written to Mr Churchill on the subject.
