FIVE COTTAGES DESTROYED.
WIND THROUGH A WINDOW
GALE CAUSES OUTBREAK

WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Five cottages on the Hillside at Hataitai were burned last night, a driving gale rendering it impossible to save them.
The fire was started by the wind bursting in the kitchen window and scattering some fat, which was on a stove, over the room.
Four of the places belonged to Bird Bros., and one, just built, to R. Hall. Two were unoccupied.
THE INSURANCES
WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Four out of the five houses destroyed by fire at Hataitai, Kllbirnie North, last night were owned by Bird Brothers and insured for £3OO each in the. Alliance office. The owners state that they are heavy losers. The fifth house, which was nowned and occupied by Gilbert Hall, of the Union Com]'amy's repairing staff, was not insured, not was his furniture covered. The Phoenix had a risk of £75 on the furniture belonging to O'Kane, who was one of Bird Bros' tenants. It is not known whether H. Godfrey's furniture was insured.
