The Rise in Beef.
SCARCITY OF FAT STOCK.
IMPORTATION PROJECT RUMOR-
Not for years has fat stock been so high priced as at the present time. Beef which is now bringing from 34s to 35s &d per IOOIbs, in late antumn and midrwiniter realised no more than from 17s Gd to £1 Is, while the average price at this season in years, past was no more than from £1 to £1 ss. The rise is, of course, due to the failure of the turnip crop and to the excessively heavy frosts experienced earlier in the year. There is a rumor afloat of a proposal to ship beef from Sydney, which it is stated, can be landed here at 25s per IOOIbs,. Prices must, of course, fall as the year advances, as it is only a (question of fattening. The shortage of good fat stock is so great, that local butchers are finding it necessary to kill animals which are little better than stores. Pork and mutton have risen in sympathy, and. the outlook for fat lambs for export has perhaps never before been so bright. Holders of fat stock see the wisdom of selling on the present good market and are getting rid quickly, not waiting for the fall.
