HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE. WELLINGTON, Monday. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, January 5 :

The mutton market is dull. There is only a small supply of New Zealand on hand. Canterbury brands are quoted at 4fdand North Is and at i per lb. River Plate mutton is quoted no 3} I pe- lb. Stocks of lamb 0:1 hand are hmvy and are widely distributed amongst agents, who are pushing sales. Australian iamb is quoted at 5d per lb. 'iha beef market is steady. There is good demand for Aew Zealand beef, which is quoted at and 3|i par lb for hind and fore quarters respectively. There are heavy supplies of bu'ter on hand, and the market is dull, but steady. Some holders are forcing sales, and butter buyers are holding back, expecting pric. s to go lower. Ohoic) New ZeUand is quoted at 108s; Argentine, 107s; Australian. 102s per cwt. D.nish is steady at 122 i per cwt. The cheese market is firm, with an improved demand. New Zjaland brands are quoted at 62s per cwt. The hemp market i 3 quiet, but steady. Good fair grade, on spit, is qu ted at J&S 10s, and January to March shipments at .£37 5s per ton. Fair current Manila, on spot, is worth .£l2 per ton, Tr.a cocksfoot seed market is firm, and there is fair demand for better grades. Bright 171b ieed is quoted at 17s per cwt. There is only a small supply of Nev Zealand wheat on hand. Long and shortberried are qioied at 29s 6d and 28s 6d respectively per 4961b, ex granary. New Zealand oats are quiet, but firm. Sparrowbills are quoted at 25s per 354,b and Danish at 19s per 820lb, ex granary. Kew Zealand beans are quoted at 32s Od per 5041 boa a quiet market.
