THE COMMERCIAL TIE. LONDON, January 8 Mr Chamberlain in response to the Montreal Star's message re Canada, says he is profoundly convinced that of all the bonds that can unite nations the bond of commerce is the strongest. Perception of this fact would ultimately lead to a closer union of Britain and the colonies. This is the long foundation of a Great Empire, and the issue had never been fairly raised by the United Kingdom. The Unionist defeat at the elections whs due to causes altogether outside preference. They do not believe that n the long run the people of Britain will not be behind other parts of the Empire in promoting a policy tending to place the Empire on a level with other great associations of nation*, with which it will have to compete.
