LICENSING COMMITTEE.

QUARTERLY MEETING

T e quarterly licensing meeting of the VVaiknt) Licensing Committee was held at the Courthouse, Hamilton, yesterday. Present: Messrs H. W. Northoroft S.M (Ciiairmin), (jr. J. A. \oung, J. 1). Melvule and J. H. R. Richardeon.

The following applications for transfers of licenses were granted:—H. Brunton to D. fc.d wards, the Whatawhata Hotel, Whatawhata; Cecil Davis to Thomas E. Uailett the Waipa Hotel, Ngaruiwahia; and James Thomas Henshaw to Isabella .>lcrv*y, the i>elta Hotel, Ngaruawahia. Mr (iillios appeared for all the above applicants. An application for transfer from J..ne Kiuch to A. L. lliggins of the Alexandra Hotel, Pirongia, was adjourned.

The following adjjurned applications for licenses were then considered:—W. H. McKenzie, the National Hotel, Cambridge; A. Underwood, Criterion Hotel, Cambridge ; and J. Sinclair (ilr Edmonds appearing), Masonic Hotel, Cambridge.

The applications w<re adjourned until January 16th, as was an application in respect of the Te Awamutu Hotel.

An application by the Ngaruawahia Regatta Committee for a conditional license for the Ngaruawahia Regatta was next considered.

The Chairman said some very good reason must be shown before the application could be granted. Last year such a license was granted, and the proceedings were such that the Press had commented very freely. It must be remembered that there were already two hotels in the township. The representatives of the Regatta Committee urged that the license was necessary in the interests of the ipublic. The hotels c mid not cope with the demand on the day of the regatta. After the applicants had been further questioned, the matter was adjourned until January 16th. The applications of the Ohaupn, Whatawhata, Alexandra and South Auckland Racing Clubs for conditional licenses were granted. The application of the Kihikihi Sports Club for a conditional license was refused., The Committee then adjourned till January 16th.
