The Waikato Times, THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE, AND KAWHIA ADVOCATE. Established Thirty-Four Years. THE OLDEST DAILY NEWSPAPER IN THE WAIKATO. THE LARGEST CIRCULATION OF ANY DAILY PAPER SOUTH OF AUCKLAND. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1906. THE DAIRY SCHOOL.

Ii is to be regretted that the Hon. R. McNab was unable to return a more favourable reply to the deputation which waited on him yesterday to urge that the proposed dairy school be established at Ruakura. Of course it was well-known that the officers of the Department were averse to the school being situated a< a place too remote from Wellington. but it was hoped that the admirable situation of the Ruakura State Farm as far as the northern part of the colony was concerned, would be suflieieiit to overrule this objection. No I doubt it, would be to the advantage of the school to be within easy roach of headquarters, but it is unfortunate that the Government is not able at I the present time to see its way to establish two schools so that the convenience of students from all parts of the colony would be more adequately recognised. However we may hope that the results attending the opening of the school, wherever it is eventually decided to place it, will be so encouraging that the Governmeut may yet be induced to open a [ »econ.d institution, when the chums |

of Huakura may be considered. But however much the refusal of the Minister to consider Huakura as the site for the School of Dairy Instruction may he regretted, his ready assent to the establishment of a school of instruction for fanners' son* there must be hailed with satisfaction. This will satisfy a want, that lias been long felt here, as in all farming districts where ex perl insti uetioti is not under ordinary circumstances available. It is to he hoped thai the farmers of the Auckland district will take the fullest advantage of the opportunity that will he placed within their reach of securing for their sons a good agricultural education. As cadets on such a farm as Huakura, they will get a grounding in such branches of agriculture as dairying, poultry and bee farming such as it would be diliicult to get anywhere else. The establishment of such a school will go a lone- way towards compensating the northern districts for being denied the Dairy School, though of course the work will necessarily not cover such a wide range. We see no reason to doubt that the innovation of the Depaitment will prove a distinct success, and will give the State farm another and important aim.
