THE MONTEBELLO.
THE CAPTAIN'S STORY
ADELAIDE. November ±2
The steamer has returned from the wreck of the Monte bello. The captain states that he had fine weather till Saturday, when it became cloudy, and he was unable to ascertain his position. At two o'clock on Sunday morning: lie heard breakers and tried to get the ship offshore. It was too dark to see the land. A few minutes after she struck, and the main mast went overboard. The sailors vainly attempted to take a line ashore, but a seaman named Zrebot succeeded. A buoy was rigged by means of empty casks, and by seven o'clock all hands were landed safely. The captain was last to leave and he brought the log and a few of the ship's papers.
