THE AUCKLAND TRAMWAYS.
STRIKE OF MEN. THE BREACH HEALED. DISORDERLY CROWDS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. r The tramway dispute ended in the men going out on strike. During yesrerday, several employees who had declined to teach beginners were dismissed, and thia action was resented by the other employees. The service continued without interruption until 430 p.m, when practically all the men came out. By 5 o'clock, when the busy part of the day with the tramway company commences, there were no cars running, and the disorganisation of the traffic continued for about three hours. After tea a conference took place between Mr Paul Hansen, representing the company, Mr Rosser, representing the men, and the Rev. W. E. Gil lam, Vicar of St. Matthew's Anglican church. It was then agreed that the employee whose dismissal bad caused the trouble should be allowed to resign as from the end of November; his wages to be paid till that date. That the men who had been dismissed for refusing to teach learners during the morning and those who had subsequently gone out should be allowed to resume work as if nothing had happened, and that in future any man accused of the offence involving dis- * missal should have the right to produce evidence in his favour if procurable. The trama then resumed running as usual. At about 7.50 p.m. a large crowd gathered in front of the Tramway Company's office, and made a hostile demonstration against the managing director. When he appeared he was greeted with prolonged hooting and groaning, and he was subsequently escorted into an adjacent hotel by several constables. At the same time two of the (Jfcm. pany's plate glass windows were smashed by missiles thrown from the crowd.
