CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOUR SOCIETY.
The United Christian Endeavour Si cietv celebrated its thirte-nrh anniversary last evening. A substanti \\ tei wan p-ovHed by members of the society, in the Ifamilton Wepleyan Sunday .School, %nd to this ample justice wa- d -,-. At the public lneeiu 4 which fid! vfcj, w~.re rendered by Airs Qualrrough, the Misses Chappell, Loveday, and and Mr Meacheui, and a violin soio by luster C. uoker, all of which were greatly enpyed. '1 he secretary, Mr K. Webber, read his report Covering the last two years' proceedings, which btated that the Society was progressing, now averaging nearly 80 members and associates preseut at the weekly winter meetings. The Society bad been able to hold cottage prayer m etings, and to make additions to its library, as well a? contribute to the Auckland Christian E.ideavour Society. It had also decided to support its own missionary abroad, and to - do further work in connection with home missions. The Rev. Hislop, one time attache I to this circuit, gave a short humorous address, describing his associations with Mr Thomas Burt, one of toe first Labour members in Parliament, nearly -10 years ago, and the ' progress of Chartist idetls, now commonplace acjepted facts. The ideals of one age were the realities of another. The Eev. A. J. Eeed, of Eotorua, also addressed the meeting. Quoting U. K. Chesterton's two kind of speeches and speakers he gave a witty dissertation on batns, as appropriate in one coming from Kotorua. The average man in other towns asks you to " come and have a drink." In Eotorua he desires you to come and havd a bath, and this is not because you are dirty but because it is the custom. He pictured the worthy President of the Society disporting himself amongst Rotorua's attractions. But he h»d also a serious side. He put in a much-needed word for wide and deep reading, and instanced pjecry and history aj valuable for this purpose ; lastly he urged the value tf the religious life. The meeting, which was well attended, closed witn a vote of thanks to all who had helped to make it successful, moved by Mrs Jones and seconded by Mr Weboer.
