OTOROHANGA
From Our Own Correspondent. The annual meeting of the subscribers to the Public Library was held on May oth. The report of the secretary, Mr Johnson, showed that a subsidy of £5 2s 5d had been received and that a balance for the year of £3 15s remained. A good number of books had been bought during the year, and we have now a fair start towards a good modern library. It was decided to insure the library and building, the previous disastrous fire having taught a lesson. The Otorohanga Football Club played its second match of the year on Saturday last, meeting and defeating TeKuiti by 6 points to 5. The play throughout was of poor nuality, probably through being so early in the season. The back play on both sides was v?ry disappointing. On the previous Saturday the same teams met at Te Kuiti, Otorohanga winning by 8 to 0. Turnips are making a splendid show, the land in this district being excellent. Many of the natives have planted patches in orier to enable themselves to have food for the winter.
The local timber mill ia kept busily going, trucks of butter-box timber being sent down in great supply to the factory at Fraukton. The manufacture of fruit cases has been added to the other \vork3.
The shooting season has not had an auspicious opening. All game is very scarce, an odd bird or so only being shot. Pheasants do not warrant anyone in takin» out a license. Rabbit poison gets the credit of destroying these birds, and if so the sooner the Acclimatistion Society take the matter in hand the better. With re • gar! to rabbits, the whole country is a live warren, and the idea of returning to the old method of paying for skins should be again carried oat This would kill two birds with the same stone, viz, keep down the rabbits, and give the Natives a chance of living, the failure of the p ,tato crop having left them in an impoverished state.
