WAHAROA

From Olr Own Correspondent.

Mild showery weather has prevailed in this locality during the past week, but at present there is every indication of a rather sharp frost. The country is looking fresher and greener than it has done for some time back. Young grass and winter oats are coming on very satisfactorily, and the turnip crops are all the more successful this Season than they have been for some time. Most of the local creameries are now working only every other.day, and the milk supply is daily decreasing, but the tests are satisfactory.

The settlers on the Waharoa-Waitoa road, having duly guaranteed to milk over two hundred cows fcr the new c:eamory during the ensuing season, the Thames Valley Dairying Company has accordingly decided to erect a branch creamery near Bennett's corner; but a3 the vacant sections in the adjoining Hungahunga blockare most likely to be forthwith occupied, it is probable that upwards of five hundred cows will he milking for the new creamery before the end of next season. The feed is

looking remarkably well for this time of the year. In a room adjoining the Wahsroi Hall, a new billiard table ha 3 recently been set up, Messrs Watts and Co. being the proprietors. The Waharoa cemetery has recently been cleared and renovated, which adds considerably to the good appearance of the settlement.

At a meeting of the Walton Cricket Club, r held last Saturday evening, Mr E. W. Murray, to whom the selection was left, decided to award the prize bat, pre-onted by the Club, to Mr H. \Y. Bennett as the best allround improved player during the late season. Mr Murray's choice is a voiy popular one and has given unanimous satisfaction to all concerned. The Waharoa football club, Mr S. Doull, secretary, has decided to hold a socialdance in the loc*l hall on the evening of Friday, June Ist. On Saturday afternoon football practices were indulged in all over this locality and some very useful work p it in, and very good form shown generally. Local club rratche3 begia next Saturday. On Friday evening last, in the Gordon schoolroom, Mr and Mrs John Carroll, junr., entertained their friends at one of the most successful and enjoyable socialdances ever held in that settlement. The function was in honour of their wedding, which took place at Hamilton on Mondoy, "*and it was attended by visitors from eveiy district all round the locality, the schoolroom being quite crowded for the occasion and to do honour to the happy couple. The room waa most tastefully decorated, and the whole arrangements were most successfully carried ont. Mr John Montaguj made a most efficient M.C., and the Carroll Bros, supplied excellent music, dancing being enthusiastically kept up until the small hours of the mornin-/. The supper, under the able supervision of Mrs New- • some, was quite up-to-date and was very much appreciated by all present. During the progress of the evening.various songs were tastefully rendered, and towards the close of the function. Mr Mat Carroll, in a neat speech, very appropriately proposed the health of the bride an 1

bridegroom, which was cordially responded to, after which he took occasion to thank all those who bad so kindly assisted in making such a success of the function, Mr Orr then moat appropriately congratulate! and welcomed the happy couple and wished them a long, happy and prosperous career, the whole assrinbly cordially joining in the good wishes. The biidegroom, on his own and his bride's behalf, suitably replied, thanking all present for their good will and kind wishes, after which dancing and card playing were resumed with renewed enthusiasm. For the eminent success of this most enjoyable function, Mrs Newsome and Mr Orr deserve great credit, Mrs Ashford and Messrs Ashford and Sheehan rendering considerable assistance. The happy couple have taken up their residence at their home in Glenwood, on the GordonWaharoa road.
